Art Deco Engagement Rings – An Opulent & Eclectic Mix
Art Deco engagement rings incorporate a wide variety of design styles. Opulent and eclectic, the Art Deco movement originated in Paris the 1920s, drawing on a mixture of the ancient and the modern.
On the one hand,
Art Deco engagement rings were elegant, glamorous, functional and modern, drawing on recent technologies such as aviation for inspiration. This is reflected in many Art Deco engagement rings feature geometric configurations and motifs. Designs also became less cluttered, with clean define lines, and strong curves. Baguette cut diamonds as well as black and white designs featuring onyx were in demand.
At the same time, increased travel and archaeological excavations also influenced jewellers, who integrated elements from the so-called “primitive” arts of and flora and fauna of Africa, as well as historical styles such as Greco-Roman Classicism and the art of Ancient Egypt into the design of Art Deco engagement rings. The discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922 influenced the period with the increased use of turquoise, coral and coloured crystal within the construction of Art Deco engagement rings.
Whilst some inter-war jewellers were still catering to wealthier clients with ground-breaking and expensive Art Deco engagement rings , others were replicating this success in cheaper materials for the mass-market customer. But for all that cheaper materials were used in abundance, gold, precious stones and platinum – a new luxury metal – remained the most popular materials for use in Art Deco engagement rings.
If you know that your girlfriend loves Art Deco engagement rings, the wide range of styles this covers can make choosing the right ring extremely challenging. Unless you’ve been given very clear guidance, there is a high risk of not getting it quite right. One approach is to involve your future fiancée in the selection of her ring.
However, if you would prefer the proposal to be a surprise, you have two main options. Firstly, you can take the plunge, and trust that your knowledge of your girlfriend’s tastes and preferences will see you select the right design. Alternatively, you could propose with a loose diamond or a temporary engagement ring, and then invite her to select an Art Deco engagement ring of her choice.
