Gemstone Earrings – Our Guide to The Different Styles of Earrings

Gemstone earrings make a gorgeous present, as you have no worries about getting the incorrect size as you do with rings. A nice touch is to get a pair of earrings, which have a matching gemstone pendant necklace, which she could always get at a later date.

 

When choosing gemstone earrings as a present firstly make sure she has her ears pieced and then just keep an eye on what type of earrings she wears for a few weeks, check to see if they are yellow gold, white gold or sterling silver as all women have a preference. A good option for gemstone earrings is to find a pair of earrings with her birthstone in which make the present that little extra special.

                      

You have several types of earrings, stud earrings, drop earrings and hoop earrings.

 

Stud gemstone earrings normally have a post and butterfly fitting, one of the most common fittings for earrings. A stud earring will be attached to the post and sit on the ear and normally has a single precious or semi precious gemstone. You can have a cluster stud style set with a coloured gemstone and diamonds.

 

Drop gemstone earrings will do what the name implies; they drop down from the ear, perfect for eveningwear as they attract that extra attention. Drop earrings you will find with coloured gemstones and diamonds or in plain gold and silver.

 

Hoop earrings are what the name implies, they are a loop of gold or silver which goes all the ways around the ear. Normally found in plain gold, however you can find fancy varieties that have a one yellow and one white gold hoop twister around each other. Some hoop earrings can be set with coloured gemstones or diamonds however they are more commonly set in a half hoop version with a post and butterfly fitting.    

 

If she doesn’t have her ears pieced then you can always get a pair of clip on earrings. In recent years they have declined in popularity so you are most likely not to have the choice you would with the pieced ear range.

 

When buying earrings in sterling silver or gold always check to ensure if they hallmarked. Small or lightweight earrings will not carry the full hallmark, as they will not meet the minimum weight required for hallmarking. A hallmark is your guarantee that the metal purity is that as stated. Some jewellers will only allow returns of earrings if damaged due to hygiene reasons. If brought online some jewellers will deliver them in a clear seal bag for you to view. If you then want to return them you just need to make sure you leave them in the bag.
