In 1477, the very first diamond engagement ring was presented to Mary of Burgundy, given to her by Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg.  Since that time, the diamond engagement ring has become known as the accepted forthcoming betrothal ring, a ‘gift of love’.  The fact that it was thought that the vein running from the third finger on the left hand runs directly to the heart, was why that finger was chosen to wear the diamond.
