Can a chipped diamond be reset without issue?

My fiance proposed with his mother’s ring and I LOVE it. I am so happy and honored to have it. Unfortunately, I found a chip in the girdle. I am going to try and have it reset. Is this a good idea? It’s a .5 round brilliant and I want a prong setting but I’m worried about damaging the diamond more. Can a jeweler polish it or do I have to take it somewhere special?
It’s not a fake.

A good goldsmith should be able to reset your diamond without difficulty unless there is a bad feather ( a crack in the diamond – it’s usually not a problem ) If the chip in the girdle is a small one and there is no feather attached to the chip your goldsmith may be able to hide the chip under a prong, or in a semi bezel setting.
The stores that I have worked in have done this type of work numerous times with no damage to the diamonds.
