Atp Tennis – Federer Ready For Indian Wells
The No.2 of the world and 27-years-old, the Swiss Roger Federer, is ready to start his next tournament at Indian Wells. The Swiss has not play since his loss against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open in January due to a back injury. Federer had to drop the Dubai Championship and the Davis Cup while he recovered from his injury.
During all this time of recovery, the 27-year-old has been working with Coach Darren Cahill, who will be probably guiding him for his return to the ATP. There has been plenty of speculation around for quite a long time about a partnership among Federer and the well known coach Cahill, but it was not until this week when the Swiss’ agent confirmed that they will be working together at Indian Wells. However, it is not known yet for how long Cahill will be with Federer, but both have much respect for each other and will work hard to see what happens.
Coach Darren Cahill has also coached players like Lleyton Hewitt, who was the youngest player to become No.1 in the ATP, and Andre Agassi, who became the oldest player (at age 33) to maintain his top spot in the ATP. With his past experience with these two great tennis players, Cahill hopes to guide Federer to a 14th Grand Slam and increase his confidence against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Federer has already won three titles at Indian Wells in consecutive years from 2004 to 2006. After that, Rafael Nadal won the title in 2007 and last year Novak Djokovic became the new champion of that tournament. This year, people expect to see Federer and Nadal facing each other again at the finals, which could be one of the most exciting finals at this amazing event in years.
Moreover, what makes this even more attractive is that the two tennis players are complete opposites on their games, for the one hand Federer has a sophisticated and artistic game while Nadal has a more athletic and determined game; but off the court both of them are gentlemen.
So, a possible final against these two players on the first Masters tournament of the year would be a great start. Indian Wells is the place where they may have their next confrontation, and their matches are always enjoyable and great to watch for tennis fans.
For Federer, Indian Wells has been a great environment to play at, especially after winning at this event in three occasions and due to the fact that hard-court tournaments are always a plus in Federer’s professional career.
“This tournament has worked out well for me, winning three titles a row and playing some of my best tennis here. I’ve had some great finals, big matches, and I always enjoy playing at Indian Wells. The surface really suits my game, my slice stays low, the kick goes up and the ball travels quickly through the air.” said the Swiss former world No. 1.
The men’s event of the Indian Wells 2009 will start this Thursday March 12th and it will gather some of the best tennis players in the world. The woman’s event will start the day before. Some of the main rivals for Federer will be the defending champion, the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the world No.4 Andy Murray, who beat Roger Federer in the semi-finals at the Qatar Open. We hope the best for the Swiss in his comeback and for the rest of the players in this amazing event.
